Transforming The Cultural Council Website...

So, what do organizations do that have little money but want a beautiful, functional website that they can update themselves? They use what's known as Content Management Systems (CMS). I use Joomla!, an award-winning CMS that helps people build websites and other powerful online applications. Joomla! is an open source solution that is freely available to everybody.

The Cultural Council of Santa Cruz County supports and advances arts and culture through Arts Learning, Grants to Artists and Arts Organizations and the Open Studios Art Tour. Their website was a hodgepodge of—let's face it—grotesque pages that harked back to the early days of web development. Images floated haphazardly and there was no consistent, professional look to the pages.

What We Did...

Cultural Council Staff developed a map of what they wanted and expected from the site. Then, I installed Joomla on a staging site and we began to transfer the old information to the new format. A variety of third-party extensions were also added, including a database, online donation capabilities, plus features such as rotating images and custom menus.

The site now has nearly 200 pages jammed with information to help local artists. Yet the new format allows people to find what they're looking for within a clean, appealing venue. And maintenance costs will be kept to a minimum because with a CMS you can update pages easily without using extra software or the need to know website coding.
